Top Secret Mission

by Grant Gaines

One of my favorite genres of movies is espionage. I’ve always enjoyed the thrill and suspense of those types of movies. But by far and away, the best type of espionage movie is one where a “sleeper agent” is involved. A “sleeper agent” is a spy who has a mission plan implanted in his brain that he doesn’t know about yet. This “sleeper agent” will go about his days minding his own business until a certain stimuli—called a “trigger”—such as a special song is heard and then suddenly, he will “awaken” to realize and execute the mission that has been placed inside his mind.

Much like these “sleeper agent” movies, I believe every non-Christian in the world could be considered a “sleeper Christian” if you will. Every person, regardless of race, gender, nationality, or religion, is born with a desire to know and love Jesus Christ, they just may not know it yet. Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV) says, “… [God] has also set eternity in the hearts of men…” which implies that every person has an innate desire to be in a personal relationship with God. We experience this desire through a never-ending longing for something more than ourselves. It is also the basis of the “sleeper Christian” theory.

People try to fill that “God-shaped” void Ecclesiastes 3:11 talks about with a countless number of things. Some try money, some try relationships, some try sex, others try drugs. And every person will tell you the same sad story, it doesn’t matter what they try to fill themselves with, (if it is not God) it does not satisfy!

We as Christians have a really cool opportunity to be a hero by setting off that God-given “trigger” so the “sleeper Christians” will awake to see that only a personal relationship with Jesus Christ can truly satisfy them. And in case you were wondering, the God-given “trigger” is the Gospel of Jesus Christ

The Gospel is simply that every person has sinned and is in need of a savior – the Lord Jesus Christ – who lived a perfect life but died on the cross as a payment for our sins and rose on the third day.

And there are many ways of sharing the gospel to non-Christians. Some people prefer to use the bridge method (a link to this method is found below), some people like to use the Roman Road (a link to this system is also found below), and still others use a number of different techniques. The method you chose to use is nothing more than personal preference, but the most important step to awaking these “sleeper Christians” is to tell them the gospel.

But to continue with the espionage theme, it is important to know that this is a time sensitive mission. Our time is running out to awaken the numerous amounts of “sleeper Christians” and inform them of the Gospel message. We must act now! In Romans 13:11 (NLT) God implores us to work quickly, “This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.”

We must be swift with our mission.  We can’t be afraid to pull the “trigger”—or tell non-Christians the Gospel. Instead, let it be said about us that we are “trigger happy” because we are sharing the gospel at all times!

God has called you to partake in this mission, will you accept?
