Do the Dew

by Grant Gaines

I have a question for you: Does dew come from the sky or the ground?

Actually, that is a trick question because the answer is neither. Dew comes from neither the sky nor the ground. Scientifically speaking, dew is moisture which is already present in the air and, when under the correct conditions, reveals itself as condensation. Pretty cool, right?

But I didn’t bring up the origin of dew purely because it is fascinating to me. I brought it up because dew is an excellent illustration of how God chooses to reveal Himself to us on a day to day basis.

God says in Hosea 14:5, “I will be like the dew to Israel…” (NIV). Now Israel was God’s chosen people, but as Christians we have been, “…adopted as [God’s] sons through Jesus Christ…” (Ephesians 1:4, 5, NIV), and therefore can be included in this promise by God.

But what does all of this mean? It means God does not wait to come to His children’s side, He is already with us, His children, and when we have our hearts in the right condition, He reveals Himself to us! And if that’s the case, then the question we have to be asking ourselves is, “What condition must my heart be in to feel God’s presence in my life?” A good question that demands a good answer. Fortunately for us, God is not a very good hide-and-seek player…He likes to be found by us!

So God answers our question of how we can find Him when He says in Jeremiah 29:13, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (NIV).

A rather simple answer to understand, wouldn’t you agree? In order to find Him, God is not asking us to do anything complicated like climbing to the top of Mount Everest backwards while counting how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. He is simply requiring that we search for Him wholeheartedly. So understanding what God is asking is not a problem.

However, applying the verse is a slightly different story. What God is saying is we WILL NOT find Him unless we are searching for Him with everything we have. This is not a casual pursuit God is calling us to.

And what does this wholehearted pursuit of God look like practically? Well, it all goes back to allowing Christ’s love to control us (2 Cor. 15:4-5, NLT). When we’re controlled by Christ’s love, we no longer live for ourselves, but rather we live for Him. Our thoughts are no longer consumed with plans of self-gratification; they are fixated on God-glorification. And when our thoughts and actions revolve around God’s glory rather than our own, then and only then will we truly experience the presence of, “…the Holy One [who is] living among [us]” (Hosea 11:9, NLT)!

We opened with a trick question and in closing I want to ask one more question. This question, unlike the opening question, is not a trick question. In fact, it is the most important question every person will have to answer in their lifetimes. The question is this:

God has made it known He wants to be found by you,

but are you willing to search wholeheartedly to find Him?

What a blessing it has been to read your articles. I am giving them to my adult son and daughter to read, as neither are churched although both profess salvation. God’s word through you is fresh and insightful and builds a bridge between where we are in the world to where God wants us to be in our spiritual realm. You speak a persuasive word for God that is unconfusing and appealing to the young in need of making the connection between our secular bodies and our eternal spirits. Please continue following His lead and I believe He will call many younger children of God to right relationship with Him through the words He obviously is giving you.

Best wishes and God’s blessings on you always, Carolyn
